With the 2026 World Cup Semi-Finals just days away, FIFA has officially weighed in on the tightening race for the tournament’s Golden Boot, clarifying that Kylian Mbappe currently holds a narrow advantage over Lionel Messi—despite both superstars sitting level on goals.

In a statement released Sunday, the world governing body confirmed that the French captain and the Argentine icon have each netted eight times so far, tying them at the top of the scoring charts.

However, under FIFA’s tiebreaker criteria, Mbappe pulls ahead thanks to his superior creative output: three assists to Messi’s single setup.

The ruling means that should both players finish the tournament with the same goal tally, Mbappe would take the prize—unless Messi adds to his assist column in the remaining matches.

The clarification comes as fans and pundits alike have speculated about who would prevail in a deadlock, especially with both men in scintillating form.

Behind the leading duo, eliminated Norway striker Erling Haaland sits third with seven goals, a remarkable haul despite his side’s early exit. England’s midfield engine Jude Bellingham and captain Harry Kane are tied for fourth with six goals apiece, each registering one assist, keeping them in the hunt should the front-runners stumble.

FIFA’s full tiebreaker protocol, detailed in the statement, reads: “If two or more players score the same number of goals, the number of assists (as determined by the members of the FIFA Technical Study Group) shall be decisive. If two or more players are still equal after taking into account the number of assists, the total minutes played in the tournament will be taken into account, with the player playing fewer minutes ranked first.”

That final clause—fewer minutes played—could yet become a factor if both goal and assist numbers remain identical, adding another layer of intrigue as Mbappe and Messi prepare for their respective semi -final clashes.

For now, the Frenchman holds the slenderest of leads, but with two games maximum remaining, the Golden Boot is very much still up for grabs.
