FIFA Reveals Massive Scale Behind Record-Breaking 2026 World Cup

The FIFA World Cup 2026™ has been described as the biggest sporting event in history, with FIFA revealing the extraordinary logistical, operational and human effort that went into staging the expanded tournament across North America.

The 39-day competition, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, featured 104 matches across 16 Host Cities, 48 Team Base Camps and 645 official sites.

According to figures released by FIFA, more than 6.8 million fans attended matches in stadiums, while 1,248 players represented the 48 participating teams.

Behind the scenes, nearly 300,000 accredited personnel were involved in delivering the tournament, including more than 43,000 volunteers, 73,700 accredited security personnel and FIFA staff representing 104 nationalities.

Security operations alone accounted for more than one million shifts, while accreditation systems processed more than five million scans across tournament sites.

The unprecedented scale of the tournament also presented huge logistical demands, with 11,337 team movements recorded across the continent.

Pitch preparation was another major undertaking, with 300,000 square metres of custom-grown sod used across stadiums and training sites to ensure playing surfaces met the required standards.

The tournament’s media and broadcast operation was equally vast. The International Broadcast Centre in Dallas operated as a media city, supporting coverage of every match and accommodating thousands of personnel.

Production teams deployed 5,000 cameras and generated more than 24,000 content items, helping bring the action to audiences across the globe.

The tournament also generated huge demand for food and beverages inside stadiums. FIFA said nearly 675,000 hot dogs were sold during the competition, while supporters consumed more than 4.6 million soft drinks and bottled waters and over 5.5 million beers.

Fan engagement extended beyond the stadiums, with FIFA Fan Festivals attracting more than nine million visitors across North America.

FIFA’s Know Before You Go communications programme also played a key role in helping supporters navigate the unprecedented tournament, distributing more than 2,300 WhatsApp messages and 7.7 million emails.

The governing body said the newly released figures provide an insight into the scale, complexity and ambition required to stage the first 48-team World Cup.

“Behind every goal, celebration and matchday experience was an operational undertaking unlike anything previously attempted in sport,” FIFA said.

The organisation added that the figures are preliminary, with additional facts, figures and insights expected to be published on its World Cup Organisation page.

The 2026 edition marked a significant expansion from previous World Cups, with the number of participating teams rising from 32 to 48 and the tournament featuring 104 matches across the three host nations.

FIFA said the numbers underline the enormous mobilisation required to deliver a global sporting spectacle involving millions of supporters, thousands of athletes and hundreds of thousands of personnel across an entire continent.
