Human rights activist and presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC),Omoyele Sowore, has called for international sanctions against Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and the organisers of the Ikogosi Marathon over an alleged attack on him and members of his team.
Sowore, in a statement issued following a statement by the marathon organisers, led by Makinde Araoye, also urged World Athletics, the global governing body for athletics, to sanction the organisers and blacklist them from future sporting events.
He alleged that the organisers were complicit in violent attacks against him and members of his team, who had registered to participate in the marathon.
“I further call for international sanctions against the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, and the organisers of the Ikogosi Marathon, including Makinde Araoye, for their involvement in these attacks or efforts to facilitate them,” Sowore said.
He condemned the alleged use of violence at sporting events, insisting that competitions should promote peace, unity and healthy rivalry rather than expose participants to intimidation and danger.
“Sporting events must never become hunting grounds for political thugs, government-sponsored violence, intimidation, or assassination,” he said.
Sowore added that runners and other participants must be guaranteed safety, regardless of their political beliefs or affiliations.
He said he would pursue further legal action against the organisers and the Ekiti State Government over the incident, which he described as inhuman and a violation of human dignity and the principles of sportsmanship.
The activist also demanded an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged attacks, saying it was necessary to establish the roles played by the organisers and state authorities.
“The circumstances surrounding these coordinated attacks raise grave questions about the involvement of the event organisers and state authorities. I demand a thorough, independent investigation to establish the full extent of their roles and hold everyone responsible and accountable,” he said.
Sowore vowed to ensure that anyone found responsible was held accountable, irrespective of their political position or connections.
“Let it be known that nobody involved in these attacks will be allowed to escape accountability. No political office, government connection, or sporting platform should provide immunity for violence against innocent citizens,” he said.
He added that he would pursue justice through every lawful avenue available, both nationally and internationally.
Sowore also called on international media organisations, including BBC Sport, CNN Sport and SuperSport, to draw attention to the allegations.
