FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets Rout New Caledonia 10-1, Face England In Round 16

Nigeria’s Falconets produced a stunning attacking display on Sunday, thrashing New Caledonia 10-1 to secure a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

The emphatic victory at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź saw Nigeria finish second in Group F on four points and book a last-16 meeting with Group E winners England on Thursday.

The Falconets had entered their final group fixture needing a convincing result after a 2-0 defeat by Spain and a goalless draw against China PR. They delivered in emphatic fashion, registering their biggest victory of the tournament and dramatically improving their goal difference.

Winner Onajite David was the star of the afternoon, scoring a hat-trick as Nigeria ran riot in the second half.

David opened her account in the 60th minute before adding her second 15 minutes later. She completed her treble in stoppage time to cap a remarkable attacking performance.

Nigeria’s goals came thick and fast after the hour mark, with Ramotalahi Kareem, Tosin Rafiu and Rebecca Adegbeimile also getting on the scoresheet.

Kareem struck in the 64th minute, while Rafiu added Nigeria’s seventh goal in the 70th minute after being set up by Onyedikachi Ekezie. Adegbeimile then scored four minutes later as the Falconets continued to overwhelm their opponents.

New Caledonia struggled to cope with Nigeria’s sustained pressure, particularly from set pieces, as Tumininu Adeshina and Rafiu repeatedly delivered dangerous corners into the opposition area.

The Falconets also created a succession of chances as Janet Akekoromowei, Amber Ogbolu and Kareem threatened the New Caledonia defence.

Head coach Moses Aduku used his substitutes to maintain Nigeria’s intensity, bringing on Ogbolu, Victory Lucky and Bright Effiong Etim in the 62nd and 79th minutes.

The changes helped the Falconets maintain their attacking momentum and contributed to a late flurry of goals.

New Caledonia managed to claim a consolation goal through Joceline Kourevi in the 89th minute, but there was still time for David to complete her hat-trick in stoppage time and seal Nigeria’s remarkable 10-1 victory.

The result gave the Falconets four points from their three group matches and confirmed their second-place finish behind Spain.

Nigeria will now face a major test against England in the knockout stage on Thursday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

The Falconets, two-time runners-up at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, will hope Sunday’s attacking performance provides the confidence needed to mount another deep run in the competition.

NFF Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the team for responding strongly after their difficult start to the group campaign.

“The Presidency through the National Sports Commission, the NFF and Nigerian Football stakeholders, and I believe all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, are very proud of the outing of the Falconets against New Caledonia,” Ikpeme said.

“They showed the true Nigeria spirit and overcame the odds when it mattered most.

“The result has taken them to the Round of 16, and we believe the team can only get better. I charge them to sustain the win-mentality and go all the way.”

The challenge now is England, as Nigeria look to carry the momentum of their record-breaking group-stage victory into the knockout rounds.
