Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has inaugurated a peace committee to address the lingering security challenges involving Bachama and Chobo communities in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The inauguration took place at the Government House, Yola, where Governor Fintiri expressed concern over the recent violence that claimed lives, destroyed property, and created fear among residents of the affected communities.
The governor commended security agencies in the state for their efforts in combating insecurity and maintaining law and order. He, however, described the crisis as unfortunate and stressed the need for urgent measures to restore lasting peace in the area.
Governor Fintiri stated that the committee was constituted to thoroughly examine the root causes of the conflict and recommend practical solutions that would promote peaceful coexistence among the people.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, emphasizing that peace and security remain fundamental to the government’s development agenda.
The governor also pledged the support of the state government to traditional institutions and community leaders, particularly the Paramount Ruler of Jonjo Chiefdom, in efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the affected communities.
According to the committee’s terms of reference, members are expected to investigate both the immediate and remote causes of the crisis, engage relevant stakeholders, and propose a sustainable framework for peace, reconciliation, and development in the area.
Responding on behalf of the committee, its Chairman, Dr. Robert David Tankawa, who is also the Paramount Ruler of Jonjo Chiefdom, assured the governor that members would work diligently and collaboratively to achieve the objectives for which the committee was established.
Dr. Tankawa noted that peace remains the foundation for meaningful development in any society and called on residents to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and mutual understanding for the progress of their communities and Adamawa State as a whole.
The committee comprises Dr. Robert David Tankawa as Chairman, Dr. Jamila Suleiman, and heads of security agencies in the state, including representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and other security formations, who are expected to contribute their expertise toward finding a lasting solution to the crisis
