Firm Targets Carbon Credits As Solution To Nigeria’s Gas Flaring Crisis

Africa Gas Transport Company Limited (AfricaGTC), backed by Dutch clean-energy company Energy Ventures B.V., said it is deploying a modular technology that converts flared gas into clean energy while generating carbon credit revenues to improve project viability.

The company, which is the Nigerian subsidiary of Energy Ventures, was established to develop the FlareOut project in Nigeria and drive local partnerships for its implementation.

AfricaGTC is set to roll out a pilot of the FlareOut solution at its Agbada-2 site near Port Harcourt to capture, process and utilise otherwise wasted associated gas that has long posed environmental and economic challenges in the Niger Delta.

FlareOut is a modular system housed in a standard shipping container, designed specifically to capture and process gas from small-scale flaring sites and convert it to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy access in underserved regions.

According to the company, deploying the technology provides on-site electricity and LPG (cooking gas) to communities that lack access to clean energy, directly addressing energy poverty while cutting emissions.

“Carbon credit revenues will further enhance the economic viability of FlareOut projects, creating additional incentives for operators to adopt and scale deployment.”

Te director of AfricaGTC, Herbert Okibe, stated that “our engagement this week is about building the partnerships needed to demonstrate how gas that is routinely flared can be converted into clean energy, economic value and tangible benefits for Nigerian communities.”

Also, the Managing Director of Afrinvest Capital, financial adviser to Energy Ventures, Jessica Essien, said the objective of the visit is to alert energy stakeholders, regulators and discerning investors to the FlareOut investment opportunity.

Nigeria flares an estimated seven to eight billion cubic metres of gas annually, ranking among the top gas-flaring nations globally, with significant implications for climate change, public health and lost economic value.
