The official Instagram account archiving Barack Obama’s time in the White House was hacked on Sunday, leading to the unauthorised posting of strange messages and images.
The security breach did not affect the former United States President’s personal social media page. Instead, it targeted the @obamawhitehouse account, which serves as a public digital record of his administration.
During the incident, the hacker shared unusual content, including an artificial intelligence (AI) generated image with a caption claiming that the White House was under the control of a specific religious group. The unauthorised user also posted several short updates using the platform’s “Stories” feature.
A Meta representative, the parent company of Instagram, confirmed the security breach shortly after it occurred. The technology company stated that the account has been fully secured and all unauthorised posts have been deleted.
“The account has since been secured… and now the unauthorised content has been scrubbed.”
The Instagram page had been inactive for over nine years before the incident. Its last official post was published on January 20, 2017, during Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.
Meta has not released any information regarding the identity or origin of the hacker
