Abia State Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Ageing has hailed the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for supporting 250 elderly persons in the state with N200,000 each.
The chairman of the forum, Ottih Nwaka, spoke at the 3rd edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) with the theme, “Finding Joy in Old Age” in Umuahia, the state capital.
Nwaka, who is also the co-chair/facilitator of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), Abuja, noted with gratitude how the support would help to bring succour to the beneficiaries
In her address, Tinubu said the programme embodied the RHIESS’s ongoing effort to ensure that the elderly citizens live with dignity and joy, in a nation that genuinely cares for its own.
Represented by the wife of the governor, Pricillia Otti, she also said the RHIESS, since 2023, celebrates the elderly every December in recognition of their invaluable contributions to nation-building
Her words: “Through this scheme, we have continued to express our gratitude and care for the men and women who have laboured to build the Nigeria we are all proud to be part of today.”
“My advice to our senior citizens is to do all that is possible to find joy in old age, let us also find purpose in community, compassion, and care.”
” Let us remember that ageing gracefully is not just about longevity but about being surrounded by love, support, and respect.
”I encourage you to continue playing your part by staying healthy and active. Nurture both your body and mind through regular exercise and meaningful engagement.’
She appreciated the governor, Alex Otti, and his wife, the state coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), as well as the partners for their cooperation and support of the scheme.
Speaking earlier, the commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Blessing Felix, lauded her for the success of the various RHI programmes in the state.
