The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sector Command, has cautioned motorists to exercise patience amid worsening traffic congestion on the Gwagwalada Bridge in Abuja.
The advisory comes as authorities continue the dismantling of temporary steel fortifications installed on the bridge.
FCT Sector Commander, Felix Theman, gave the warning in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Command’s Public Education Officer, Helen Ntaji.
Theman urged road users to remain calm, cooperate with FRSC personnel and other security agencies, and strictly obey traffic directives to ensure smooth vehicular movement along the corridor.
The steel fortifications were installed in 2025 to support the movement of heavy-duty equipment during the bridge expansion, which led to the temporary closure of the inward carriageway.
The sector commander explained that the ongoing dismantling process has significantly slowed traffic, resulting in delays, loss of man-hours, and inconvenience to commuters.
“Motorists are therefore strongly advised to remain patient, maintain decorum and strictly obey traffic officers managing vehicular movement within the corridor.
“Compliance with the directives of officers on duty will greatly assist in easing congestion and ensuring smoother traffic flow within the available carriageway pending the completion of the dismantling of the temporary steel structures,” he said.
Theman further warned that with the Eid-el-Fitr (Sallah) festive period approaching, traffic volume is expected to increase, making adherence to traffic rules even more critical.
“As the Sallah festive period approaches with the likelihood of increased vehicular movement along the corridor, drivers are further urged to maintain lane discipline,” he added.
He also cautioned against dangerous overtaking and urged motorists to comply with all traffic regulations while navigating the construction zone.
“This will help prevent avoidable crashes and ensure that the current situation is not worsened by lack of cooperation from road users,’’ he emphasised.
The FRSC boss assured that personnel of the corps would remain on ground to provide guidance and manage traffic effectively, adding that the command is in constant engagement with the construction company to fast-track completion of the work.
