The Zamfara Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has recorded a six per cent reduction in road crashes compared to 2024.
Sector Commander Aliyu Ma’aji disclosed this during a press briefing in Gusau to flag off the 2025 Ember Months Campaign.
According to him, 46 road crashes were recorded in 2025, compared to 56 in 2024 — a decrease of 6.27 per cent.
Ma’aji explained that while 51 persons died and 259 sustained injuries in 2024, most of the casualties were due to the mixed loading of goods, animals, and passengers in trucks.
He said this year’s “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving” campaign underscores that human factors remain the leading cause of road crashes.
The commander lamented that driver fatigue, overloading, and passenger carriage in haulage vehicles continued to endanger lives on the highways.
“Travelling with fuel in plastic containers and disregard for safety regulations are also major contributors to these accidents,” Ma’aji stated.
He added that the command had mapped out “formidable strategies” to achieve safer roads across the state during the year-end festive season.
Meanwhile, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, revealed that over 3,400 people died in road crashes nationwide between January and September 2025.
Speaking in Abuja during the launch of the national Ember Months campaign, Mohammed said 3,433 people were killed, while 22,162 others sustained injuries in 6,858 reported crashes within nine months.
He attributed most incidents to “driver recklessness, fatigue, and the unsafe transport of passengers and goods.”
Mohammed stressed that the campaign, which runs from December 15 to January 15, aims to reduce fatalities by promoting responsible driving during the festive rush.
