Galatasaray SK are preparing to hand Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen a more prominent leadership role within the squad, as the club looks ahead to the next phase of its domestic dominance.
Head coach Okan Buruk revealed that Osimhen’s influence extends far beyond his goalscoring exploits, describing the forward as a “hidden captain” within the dressing room. The comments come amid growing expectations that current skipper Mauro Icardi could depart at the end of the season.
Osimhen has been instrumental in Galatasaray’s continued success, scoring 20 goals across all competitions this term and playing a central role in their push for a fourth consecutive league title. His contributions were equally vital last season, when the Istanbul giants secured a domestic double.
Buruk suggested that the club’s hierarchy, including the president and board, will soon decide on the captaincy structure, with Osimhen firmly in contention to assume greater responsibility.
“Of course, we will make the best decision together,” Buruk stated. “He is a very strong leader and already commands respect within the team.”
Should the move materialise, it would mark another significant milestone in Osimhen’s career, reinforcing his status not only as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards but also as a key figure in shaping the club’s future direction.
