The Gas Aggregator Company of Nigeria Limited (GACN) has sought the the support of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to address Nigeria’s ongoing gas shortages crippling the power sector.

GACN’s managing director, Chijioke Uzoho, while on a courtesy visit to NMDPRA’s chief executive, Saidu Mohammed, outlined the company’s 2026 priorities and key projects, according to a post on the NMDPRA’s official X handle on Wednesday.

Uzoho briefed the NMDPRA management on GACN’s strategic initiatives aimed at boosting gas aggregation and delivery to power plants.
He requested regulatory backing to overcome supply hurdles that have long hampered electricity generation and other industrial developmental needs.

Nigeria’s power sector faces chronic gas shortages, with generating companies often stranded at 40 per cent capacity despite over 13,000 MW potential, due to upstream constraints, vandalism, and infrastructure gaps.

This shortfall stems from upstream supply constraints, vandalism, and inadequate infrastructure, forcing frequent load shedding and blackouts that cost the economy billions in lost productivity.

GACN plays a pivotal role here as the designated aggregator under the Gas Master Plan, tasked with consolidating gas from producers, optimising allocation, and bridging the supply-demand gap to ensure reliable feedstock for thermal plants—ultimately aiming to boost electricity generation and industrial output.

Uzoho’s visit underscores GACN’s 2026 focus on expanding aggregation pipelines, enhancing domestic market obligations (DMO) compliance, and forging partnerships to inject more gas into the national grid.

GACN, established under the Gas Master Plan, bridges this gap by consolidating supplies from producers, enforcing domestic market obligations, and ensuring reliable gas for thermal plants to enhance power output and economic stability.
