Ghana Premier League Player Shot Dead In Armed Robbery Attack

Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong was killed after a team bus was blocked by armed robbers and fired upon on Sunday.
Mirror reports that the 20-year-old player was travelling with his team after their Ghana Premier League match with FC Samartex when the incident unfolded.

It is reported that the bus was making its way along the Bibiani-Goaso road when a number of gunmen prevented them from advancing, before shooting at the bus. While horrified players and staff ran for their lives, Frimpong was shot dead.

The talented young player was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital with a head injury, but was sadly later pronounced deceased. In a statement, Berekum Chelsea explained the horrific events which unfolded.

They wrote: “On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage. Masked men with guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse.

“The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover. We are grateful to the police patrol team for its rapid response, to the sports journalists who quickly disseminated the information, to the town of Ashiresu, which provided temporary shelter for our players and officials of Bibiani Gold Stars, and to the officials of Bibiani Gold Stars, who have offered tremendous support.

“We are also grateful to all well-wishers and last but not least the President of the Ghana Football Association for his prompt response in this difficult moment.”

The Ghana Football Association also shared a statement of support for Berekum Chelsea and Frimpong’s family. It read: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club.”
