Fans of the award-winning Japanese animation director, Hayao Miyazaki, are in for a treat this March, as his 1989 Ghibli animation ‘Kiki’s Service’ will be released on IMAX on March 13, 2026.
The reproduction stars American actors Kirsten Dunst (as Kiki), Phil Hartman, and Debbie Reynolds.
Synopsis: A 13-year-old witch moves to a seaside town with her talking cat, Jiji, to spend a year as a witch in training, according to her village’s tradition. But when the insecure young witch begins questioning herself and loses her magic abilities, she must overcome her self-doubt to get back her power.
Written by Japanese author Eiko Kadono in 1985, the children’s fantasy novel was first adapted into an animated film by Studio Ghibli in 1989, directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
It has been re-released multiple times on home media (VHS, DVD, Blu-ray) and in theatres by GKIDS, including a 35th-anniversary release in 2024 and a 2025 ‘Ghibli Fest’ screening.
The newly remastered 4 K version will be released in IMAX theatres in the US and Canada.
