Nigeria strengthened its medal prospects at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday as Jennifer Obi Chukwuka and Olayinka Olajide advanced to the women’s 200 metres semi-finals, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi booked his place in the men’s shot put final.
Chukwuka produced an impressive performance in Heat Four of the opening round, clocking a personal best of 23.26 seconds to win the race and secure automatic qualification for the semi-finals.
Canada’s Marie-Eloise Leclair finished second in 23.50 seconds, while The Gambia’s Nyimansata Jawneh took the third automatic qualifying spot in 23.74 seconds.
Olajide also progressed from Heat Five after finishing third in 23.62 seconds.
Jamaica’s Lavanya Williams won the heat in 22.91 seconds, with Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Pereira taking second in 23.00 seconds.
The results mean Nigeria will have two representatives in the women’s 200m semi-finals as the country continues its pursuit of more athletics medals in Glasgow.
In the men’s 200m, Udodi Onwuzurike also produced a strong display, clocking 20.31 seconds to secure automatic qualification for the semi-finals and further boost Nigeria’s hopes in the sprint events.
Earlier, Enekwechi comfortably progressed to the men’s shot put final after topping Group B with a throw of 20.03 metres.
The Nigerian finished ahead of India’s Samardeep Singh Gill, who recorded 19.95m, New Zealand’s Nick Palmer (19.92m), South Africa’s Aiden Smith (19.86m) and Mauritius’ Bernard Baptiste (15.00m).
New Zealand’s Tom Walsh posted the best qualifying mark overall, throwing 21.03m in Group A. India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor (20.14m) and England’s Scott Lincoln (20.09m) also secured automatic qualification.
Nigeria will now look to convert Wednesday’s promising performances into medals, with Chukwuka, Olajide and Onwuzurike targeting places in their respective 200m finals, while Enekwechi bids for a podium finish in the shot put.
