Gombe Govt Inaugurates, Hands Over Northeast Zonal Office Of Code Of Conduct Tribunal

The Gombe State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting institutions of accountability and the fight against corruption, as it formally handed over an accommodation facility to serve as the North-Eastern Zonal office of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT)

The commissioning and handing over was preceded by a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau Ph.D, by the staff of the Tribunal led by the CCT Acting Registrar, Victor Isibor.

Receiving the team on behalf of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed the State Government’s readiness to support the Tribunal in ensuring an effective and sustainable fight against corruption in the North-East.

He however, used the occasion to make a strong case for fundamental legal and institutional reforms, particularly on the review of laws and regulatory frameworks which according to him, “no longer adequately reflect contemporary realities”.

Dr. Jatau argued that Nigeria’s anti-corruption institutions require appropriate legal powers, adequate manpower and modern statutory frameworks if they are to effectively confront the complexities of corruption in the 21st century.

He questioned the continued reliance on provisions and administrative requirements developed in a different era, stressing that changing social, economic and technological realities demands corresponding reforms in the laws governing public accountability.

He particularly drew attention to the need for stronger institutional capacity, noting the enormous national responsibility placed on the CCT while its constitutional structure provides for a Chairman and only two members with jurisdiction across the federation.

He therefore encouraged stakeholders and lawmakers to pursue reforms capable of providing the Tribunal with greater institutional capacity, realistic powers and adequate personnel to match the scale of its responsibilities.

Speaking on behalf of the CCT Chairman, Dr. Mainasara Umar Kogo ,the Acting Registrar, Victor Isibo explained that the establishment of the North-Eastern operational base in Gombe would enhance the Tribunal’s ability to discharge its responsibilities across the region.

He commended Gombe State government for its generosity and hospitality, describing the gesture as consistent with the State’s reputation as the “Jewel in the Savannah.”
