Google has announced that it will turn off Google Search and AI-powered tools for students using school-managed K-12 accounts in districts that prohibit artificial intelligence.
The policy change, announced on Tuesday, November 3, means that services like Google Search, Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Gemini in Classroom will be switched off by default.
According to Google, these tools will remain unavailable until school administrators explicitly choose to turn them back on.
The move comes amid growing debates among educators and parents over student screen time, data privacy, and fears that unregulated AI tools could hinder traditional learning and development.
Chris Phillips, Google’s vice president and general manager of education, explained that schools maintaining strict bans on AI will find search functionality disabled, displaying a notification informing students that the service is unavailable through their institutional accounts.
