The Sokoto State government has dismissed media reports claiming that Governor Ahmed Aliyu accompanied the Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti, to visit the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.
In a statement released by the governor’s spokesman, Abubakar Bawa, the government described the reports as “misleading,” insisting that Governor Aliyu was not in Nigeria during the visit.
The statement said, “Governor Aliyu was in Saudi Arabia performing the Lesser Hajj on November 30, 2025, the day Dr Otti privately visited Sokoto.”
Government officials clarified that upon Dr Otti’s arrival at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport,
He was received not by the governor but by “selected commissioners and special advisers,” who then accompanied him to the Government House for the traditional courtesies extended to visiting governors.
Bawa emphasised the hospitality of the Sokoto people, noting that, “We treat our visitors with utmost respect, irrespective of tribe or religion.”
The statement reaffirmed Governor Aliyu’s commitment to peace, respect for constituted authority and dedication to the unity of Nigeria.
