Less than two years after the recruitment of over 7,000 teachers, Jigawa State governor, Umar Namadi, has approved the recruitment of 2,200 teachers for senior secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.
The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Isah Yusuf, revealed this while briefing newsmen on the recruitment modalities.
He explained that the governor approved the conversion of 1,100 temporary teachers to permanent and pensionable status, adding that this process will be completed within two months.
Prof Yusuf added that the governor also approved the recruitment of 800 new temporary teachers, who will be assessed in the near future for possible conversion to permanent positions.
“The governor also approved the recruitment of 300 staff members for the eight tertiary institutions owned by the state.
“These recruitment exercises came less than a year after 2,200 staff members from basic education were moved to higher education, after consideration of their certificates and experience, including some who were promoted to lecturers,” he said.
The commissioner said, this is part of Governor Namadi’s efforts to bridge the teacher-students gap in classrooms and to ensure that teaching and learning take place for improved learning outcomes.
He maintained that the state governor has always emphasized his government’s determination to spend all available resources to ensure access to quality education for every child in the state.
“If you look at the salaries of these 2,200 newly recruited teachers, it amounts to over N2 billion monthly. This is a huge investment, and we are optimistic that with the current trend of mass teacher recruitment, the long history of teacher shortages in Jigawa State schools will soon become a thing of the past, replaced by new hope for better educational opportunities for all,” the commissioner added.
