Cross River State governor, Bassey Otu, yesterday in Calabar swore in Mr Egbung Odama Egbung as the substantive chairman of Bekwarra local government area, urging him to lead with humility, unity and a people‑centred approach.

The governor urged Odama not to see the position as an opportunity to act like an emperor but to render service to his people.

The ceremony, which formally ended the council’s leadership crisis, also served as the governor’s New Year address to stakeholders and guests.

Otu highlighted the strategic importance of local government as the tier closest to the people and vital to grassroots development, oting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) places premium value on effective local governance because of its direct impact on families and livelihoods.

He commended party leaders, traditional chiefs and security agencies for managing the transition peacefully, praising the APC’s maturity in preserving unity and stability.

“Position is not given to you to exert power or become an emperor. Position is for you to serve the people,” Otu said, reminding the new chairman that leadership is a call to responsibility, compassion and accountability, especially to the most vulnerable.

Otu expressed confidence in Egbung’s capacity, citing his experience, character and steady performance while acting in the role.

He described the chairman as a product of due process who understands governance from the ground up and has earned the trust of his people.

Bekwarra, the governor added, remains a key part of the administration’s economic vision for northern Cross River, with ongoing and future initiatives set to reposition the area for growth and shared prosperity.

In his response, Hon. Egbung thanked God for the “eventful and fulfilling day” and assured residents of his readiness to serve diligently.

He pledged an administration guided by transparency, strict adherence to rules of engagement and a commitment to the welfare of the people.

“Leadership to me simply means service,” he said, adding that the new year will be one of renewed energy, hard work and collective progress.

The governor congratulated Odama and his family, urging them to view the appointment as service to God, the state and the people of Bekwarra, and expressed optimism that better days lie ahead for Cross River State.
