Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has received a delegation from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and construction firm Mota-Engil Nigeria ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kano Light Rail Project, recently approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The delegation, led by the Managing Director of MOFI, Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, and the Chairman of Mota-Engil Nigeria, Kola Karim, met the governor at the Kano State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, to brief him on preparations for the commencement of the project.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Kano Light Rail Project was approved at a contract sum of ₦1.05 trillion.

The statement said the project is expected to “transform urban transportation in Kano, improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion and stimulate economic activities across the state.”

During the meeting, Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the federal government and contractors to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

He described the light rail scheme as “a strategic investment that will strengthen Kano’s position as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria” while providing residents with “a modern, safe and efficient mass transit system.”

According to the statement, Yusuf expressed “profound appreciation to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for considering Kano to benefit from the laudable project.”
