Yobe State governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has commended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for its support for victims of the September 14 airstrike in Buhari community, Yunusari local government.
The NAF Headquarters donated ₦23 million to the victims and their families as part of efforts to alleviate their suffering and rebuild trust with the affected community.
Presenting the donation on behalf of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, the Air Component commander of the Joint Task Force North-East “Operation Hadin Kai”, Air Commodore Umar Idris, expressed the Force’s regret over the unfortunate incident.
He said ₦1 million was given to each of the families of the eight deceased victims, while ₦500,000 was presented to each of the 30 injured persons.
He said the tragic airstrike occurred while NAF jets were on a mission targeting ISWAP insurgents in the area.
Air Commodore Idris said the gesture underscored the Air Force’s commitment to the welfare of civilians and its readiness to support communities affected by military operations.
He revealed that NAF had embarked on several quick-impact projects in Buhari community, including the installation of a solar-powered borehole to provide potable water, with additional projects planned to enhance the community’s livelihood.
Governor Buni, represented by his special adviser on security matters, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), thanked the Nigerian Air Force for its empathy and swift intervention.
Buni said the airstrike was an unfortunate mistake, stressing that it was never intentional but occurred during an operation targeting a Boko Haram enclave.
The governor assured the victims of the state government’s continuous support and collaboration with the military to ensure their safety and well-being.
