Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, officially received the Torch of Unity for the upcoming 2nd Niger Delta Games on Monday at Government House, Asaba. The games are scheduled to take place in Benin City, Edo State, from 20th to 27th February.

Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed the Delta State Government’s unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and regional integration through sport. He emphasised that the torch symbolises more than just a sporting emblem.

“This torch we received today goes beyond a ceremonial sporting emblem. It is a profound symbol of peace, unity, and our shared vision to use sports as a catalyst for sustainable development in the Niger Delta.”

He highlighted that the competition has evolved into a crucial platform for discovering and nurturing sporting talent, encouraging healthy competition, and strengthening camaraderie among the region’s states. The Governor further stressed the role of sport in positively engaging young people, instilling discipline, fostering teamwork, promoting excellence, and diverting them from social vices.

Governor Oborevwori commended the organisers for their foresight and consistent efforts in utilising sport as a tool for regional development. He also acknowledged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for their sponsorship and steadfast support, stating that their investment underscores their dedication to youth empowerment, peace, and unity across the Niger Delta.

He assured organisers and stakeholders of his government’s full support for the successful hosting of the event and urged participating athletes to compete with determination, fairness, and true sportsmanship, reminding them they are “ambassadors of hope, unity, and progress for the Niger Delta.”

Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, described the championship flame as “a sign of collective strength and shared vision among Niger Delta states.” He confirmed that Delta had completed a rigorous selection process, ensuring that only the best athletes would represent the state in all 16 sporting events.

Mr. Itiako Ikpokpo, Project Consultant and Managing Director of Dunamis-Icon Limited, who led the delegation presenting the torch, expressed gratitude for the warm reception. He explained that the Niger Delta Games aim to harness and add value to the region’s abundant sporting talents, with a focus not just on winning medals but on identifying and nurturing future champions. Over 4,000 athletes are expected to compete.
