Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday inaugurated the reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as chairman, marking a major restructuring of the state’s traditional leadership system.
The ceremony, held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, followed the signing of the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Bill 2024, which dissolved the five additional emirates created by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and restored the historic centralised structure.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the council now comprises the Emir of Kano and the Emirs of Gaya, Karaye and Rano as members.
Governor Yusuf said the reconstituted council would strengthen the roles of the traditional institution in governance, describing it as a custodian of cultural heritage and a stabilising force for peace and development. He said the new structure provides a unified platform for the royal fathers to offer guidance on issues affecting the state.
“The inauguration of the Council of Emirs is a reaffirmation of our commitment to preserve Kano’s cultural legacy and deepen the partnership between government and the emirates,” the governor stated.
Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo expressed confidence that the council would play a strategic role in advancing development across the state.
Earlier, Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, traced the historical evolution of the Kano Emirate, noting that the reforms restore a 700-year-old tradition in which Kano remained the central authority over the subordinate emirates.
Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, speaking on behalf of the other emirs, said the revival of the council aligns with historical norms and pledged the royal fathers’ commitment to supporting the government in fostering progress and stability in Kano.
