…Residents to get additional 40m litres of potable water
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has revived the Goron Dutse water facility after about 30 years of inactivity, with the restored infrastructure expected to boost potable water supply to Kano metropolis by an additional 40 million litres.
Yusuf disclosed this on Monday during an inspection of the facility, where he assessed the three reservoirs and pumping infrastructure being rehabilitated for the distribution of treated water across the metropolis.
The governor said the restoration was part of his administration’s efforts to revive critical water infrastructure across the state following inspections of dams, treatment plants, pumping stations and other facilities.
He said the assessment culminated in the award of an N11bn contract for major works aimed at improving water production, treatment and distribution in the state.
Yusuf said the completion of rehabilitation works at the Challawa Water Works had also enabled the testing of the 15.6-kilometre pipeline linking the treatment plant to the Goron Dutse reservoirs.
He explained that treated water from the Challawa Water Works would be conveyed through the pipeline to the three reservoirs at Goron Dutse, where it would be stored before being pumped into the distribution network serving communities across the metropolis.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the restoration of the pumping facility, describing its return to operation as a significant milestone in efforts to improve access to potable water in Kano.
He said the three reservoirs had a combined storage capacity of approximately 40 million litres and would provide additional storage for treated water before its distribution to residents.
Yusuf assured residents that his administration would continue to complete the infrastructure and technical works required to improve the availability and reliability of potable water in the state.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahir Muhammad Hashim, said rehabilitation and technical works had been carried out on the three reservoirs and the associated pumping infrastructure.
Hashim said the remaining preparations were at an advanced stage, adding that the ministry would seek the governor’s approval to commence pumping potable water from the Goron Dutse facility into Kano metropolis once the works were completed.
