Green Beret FC Win 1 Div. Nigerian Army Football Tourney

The Green Beret FC emerged winners of 1Division Nigerian Army Football for Peace Tournament 2024 after beating Simoiben FC 13-12 on penalty.

The 3- day tournament organized by the 1 division Nigerian Army in collaboration with Simoiben Football Academy which took place at the new barracks football pitch in Ribadu Cantonment Kaduna was aimed at uniting the youths and communities through sports for peaceful co-existence.

The 4-team football tournament which commenced on Friday, June 7, came to a climax on Sunday, June 9, 2024 after it was declared open by the Kaduna State governor, Senator Uba Sani, who was ably represented by the commissioner for sports development, Prof Benjamin Gugong.

Earlier in the third place match between Kachia FC and Birnin Gwari FC also ended in a penalty shootout in favour of the Kachia football club after a goalless draw at regulation time.

Speaking after presentation of trophy to teams, the general officer commanding (GOC) 1 division, Nigerian Army and commander operation Whirl Punch, Maj Gen MLD Saraso, said the initiative represents a remarkable convergence of sportsmanship, community engagement and the pursuit of peace which are vital components of the Nigerian Army’s Civil Military Cooperation activities aimed at foster peace and stability in Kaduna State.

“The significant sporting event which is organised in conjunction with Simoiben Football Academy Kaduna, embodies commitment to fostering peaceful and harmonious co-existence among the youths of Kaduna State as part of the Nigerian Army Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities,” he said
He stressed that the tournament is not just a sporting event but a platform to bridge divides and build enduring relationships within communities, reiterating that sports and football in particular, serve as powerful tools for unity which transcend barriers, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds and fostering a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect.
