A group, the Crusade for Transparency Network (CTN), has passed a vote of confidence on the executive chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Amb. Joseph Kwaghgba.
It described his first year in office as being marked by transformative leadership, institutional reforms and improved revenue generation for the state.
CTN said the remarkable progress recorded by BIRS since Kwaghgba assumed office on July 7, 2025, had strengthened internally generated revenue and contributed to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s developmental agenda.
In a statement jointly signed by the organisation’s publicity secretary, Comrade Aduku Adai, and secretary, Alhaji Bashiru Umar, CTN said, “The remarkable progress recorded by BIRS since July 7, 2025, when Amb. Joseph Kwaghgba assumed office, has strengthened internally generated revenue and contributed meaningfully to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s developmental agenda across Benue State.”
CTA added that its assessment was reinforced by Governor Alia’s recent commendation of BIRS during an interaction with the State House Press Corps at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the governor acknowledged the agency’s critical role in boosting the state’s internally generated revenue and supporting the government development programmes.
The group stated that under Kwaghgba’s leadership, BIRS had remained fully committed to the principles of the Treasury Single Account (TSA).
According to the statement, “The Service has ensured that all revenue collected is remitted directly into the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account in accordance with established financial regulations, thereby promoting transparency, accountability and fiscal discipline.”
The organisation further stated that the agency has successfully pursued its statutory mandate of assessing, collecting, accounting for, and administering taxes due to the Benue State Government, while expanding the tax base, encouraging voluntary tax compliance, and introducing modern tax administration practices.
