The Bala Wunti Support Organisation (BWSO) has expanded its free internet initiative to five communities and public spaces across Bauchi metropolis to improve digital access and connectivity in the state.

The newly connected areas are GSM Village, Emir’s Drive, Bakaro Street, Wunti Street and Malam Goje Street, where residents, traders, students and business owners now access free WiFi services.

LEADERSHIP reports that BWSO had installed free internet WiFi in over 30 tertiary institutions in the State.

In a statement signed by the chief communication officer of BWSO, Abubakar Al-Sadique, he said the expansion was part of an experimental phase designed to assess public response and measure the social and economic impact of wider internet accessibility before extending the programme to other parts of the state.

He said the initiative is already attracting attention in GSM Village, a major hub for mobile phone dealers, technicians and young entrepreneurs. Beneficiaries say the free internet service is helping them communicate with customers, advertise products online, download applications, and improve business operations without the burden of expensive data subscriptions.

Al-Sadique said at the Emir’s Drive, Wunti Street, Bakaro Street, and Malam Goje Street, residents and small-scale business owners have also begun taking advantage of the connectivity for communication, online transactions, and access to information.

He emphasised that the programme is aimed at promoting digital inclusion and supporting economic activities by making internet services accessible to ordinary residents.

He added that the intervention forms part of a broader vision to prepare young people and local communities for opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.

He said free internet programme has also been extended to tertiary institutions across Bauchi State, where students now use the service for research, virtual learning, and access to educational resources.
