The Ayatutu Cultural and Social Development Initiative (AYACASODI) has called for a thorough investigation into the reported killing of mourners by soldiers in Jato-Aka, Kwande local government area of Benue State.

Addressing journalists in Abuja over the weekend, the association’s national president, Chief Timothy Baaki, alleged that troops of the Nigerian Army opened fire on mourners returning from the burial of the kindred head of Nzaav in Yaav Ward, Hanave Laha, on September 30, 2025.

According to Baaki, several people lost their lives in the incident, including Mody, son of the deceased, and his associate Shija.

Others reportedly killed were identified as Mr. Iorsuur Abuul, Mr. Akula Shija of Moon Council Ward, as well as students Gloria Songo of ATM Devine Academy and Tersoo Msughter of Turan Community Secondary School, Jato-Aka.

He further stated that some individuals sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at various hospitals, including Terlumun Menenge, Sefa Aondoakula, Washima Aondoakula, and Imoter Aku, all secondary school students in the area.

Describing the development as “deeply regrettable,” Chief Baaki urged the federal government to ensure a transparent investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

He also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff to look into the matter, while appealing to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to assist affected families with medical and humanitarian support.

“For decades, these communities have endured recurring attacks and displacements. The September 30 incident has caused renewed tension and grief. We appeal for justice and for lasting peace to return to the area,” Baaki said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement regarding the alleged incident.
