GSS Biu Alumni Mark 40th Anniversary, Unveils Legacy Projects

The 1984 Set of Government Secondary School (GSS) Biu has celebrated their 40th anniversary with a reunion that highlighted their commitment to legacy development projects.

Held at the school premises under the theme “Role of Alumni in Societal Development and Unity,” the event brought together alumni, dignitaries, and notable guests.

His Excellency Amb. Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd), former Chief of Army Staff, was represented by Brig. Gen. Abdullahi Dadan-Garba (Rtd), Director General of the Tukur Buratai Institute for War and Peace. Borno State Deputy Governor, Hon. Usman Umar Kadafur, attended as the Special Guest of Honour, while Hon. Prof. Haruna Yerima of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria delivered a keynote address.

Alumni Contributions to Development
In his welcome address, (Rtd), Acting President of the 1984 Alumni Set,
Maj. Gen. Abdulmalik Bulama Biu expressed gratitude to attendees and reflected on the formative role GSS Biu played in their lives.

He emphasized the alumni’s commitment to giving back, announcing the construction of six latrines with water reticulation as an initial project.

“We owe our successes to the solid foundation laid at GSS Biu. This reunion is an opportunity to reflect on our journey and contribute meaningfully to our alma mater,” Maj. Gen. Biu said.

Amb. Lt. Gen. Buratai, represented by Brig. Gen. Dadan-Garba, commended the alumni’s initiatives.

“This reunion celebrates shared history and enduring bonds. Your projects uplift the school and set a benchmark for others,” he stated.

Keynote speaker Prof. Haruna Yerima highlighted the role of alumni in education.

“Supporting education through alumni contributions is a strategic investment in national development,” he said, urging continued mentorship and financial support.

Deputy Governor Kadafur praised the alumni’s collective efforts. “The actions of the GSS Biu alumni exemplify the power of community spirit. Their contributions inspire others to support educational institutions, the foundation of societal progress,” he noted.

Recognition and Awards
The event recognized individuals for their contributions to education and community service.

Amb. Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai received the Award of Commitment to Excellence for his dedication to humanity.

Hon. Usman Umar Kadafur was honored with the Award of Excellence for his service to the community.

Additional awards went to Hon. Mukhtar Berata, Mohammed Goni Alkali, and late staff members Malam Garba, Hajiya Zara Kida, and Malam Bukar Wakshama. The Emir of Biu and Shani also received an Alumnus Appreciation Award.

Celebrating Legacy and Future Initiatives
The reunion concluded with a call to honor departed alumni members and a pledge to strengthen the school and its community.
