Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc has disclosed that it donated a total of N1.71 billion to charitable causes in the 2025 financial year, as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility despite a challenging macroeconomic environment.
Details from the group’s audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2025, show that total donations rose by 77.7 per cent to N962.6 million from N542.8 million in 2024, reflecting a sharp year-on-year increase in philanthropic spending.
The 2025 financials of the banking conglomerate show that the total of N171 billion disbursed during the period was channelled into various social impact initiatives, with activities and supported causes spanning key sectors such as education, healthcare, community development and humanitarian interventions.
Most of the donations went into community development, which accounted for 62.6 per cent of the total, followed by support for education and health. GTCO’s support for various community development projects totalled N1.072 billion, spanning women, youth, children, and professional causes.
Its largest donation went to the Beat the Distance Bicycle programme, its CSR initiative for students, which received N587.91 million during the year. It also donated N393.6 million to support healthcare provision in partnership with the Swiss Red Cross.
The banking conglomerate also spent N294.07 million on its 2025 Annual Autism Conference. Beyond the headline donation figure, the group said its social investments are anchored on a broad sustainability framework aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with interventions spanning education, healthcare, community development, the environment and the arts.
It noted that its commitment to decarbonisation and sustainable infrastructure was demonstrated through the deployment of solar-powered boreholes in communities such as Foni, Kiang and Sare Cherno in The Gambia, improving access to clean drinking water while leveraging renewable energy. The bank also intensified its youth-focused programmes, driving financial literacy campaigns through Global Money Week and World Savings Day, alongside funding education initiatives, including hostel renovations and school-based engagements.
In the area of public health and community support, GTCO disclosed that it implemented a range of initiatives, including breast cancer awareness, autism advocacy, blood donation drives, and maternal healthcare programmes, as well as partnerships with hospitals and health organisations.
Its community development efforts also included flood relief interventions in Nigeria, donation of medical equipment in Ghana and the rehabilitation of public schools. On environmental sustainability, the group said it is targeting a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 30 per cent cut in non-recyclable waste over the next five years, with current efforts focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction and responsible resource utilisation.
