Pep Guardiola has warned that Manchester City cannot afford any slip-up in the Premier League title race, admitting their challenge could effectively be “over” if they fail to beat West Ham United on Saturday.

City currently sit second in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Arsenal FC, although Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand. Both teams are also set to meet in what could be a decisive showdown at the Etihad Stadium on 19 April.

Despite the looming clash with Arsenal, Guardiola insists his focus is entirely on the immediate challenge in London.

“Now it’s West Ham. The Premier League is the most difficult title,” Guardiola said. “We’re still there, but we know that if we drop points it will be over.”

West Ham head into the encounter fighting for survival at the opposite end of the table. The Hammers are currently in the relegation zone, level on points with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest but behind on goal difference.

However, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have shown signs of improvement, losing just one of their last five league matches.

Guardiola acknowledged the desperation of their opponents but insisted City are equally determined in their pursuit of the title.

“I’ve always said when we arrive in the last 10 games every team is playing for something — relegation, Europa League, Conference League, Champions League, or the title,” he said. “It’s normal. Every game matters. Now there are no second chances.”

City head into the weekend fixture after a disappointing 3–0 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie, but Guardiola refused to dwell on that setback.

“Tomorrow night we have an important Premier League game, then we think about the second leg,” he said.

City will host Madrid in the return leg on Tuesday as they attempt to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
