The President of the MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has described the death of former Voice of America (VOA) correspondent and veteran journalist, Saleh Shehu Ashaka, as a monumental loss to both the media industry and the nation.

Gwarzo said the late Ashaka lived a life defined by impact and service, dedicating his career to upholding the ethics and professionalism of journalism.

He described him as a committed and respected journalist whose work earned admiration across Nigeria and beyond.

“Saleh was not just an outstanding journalist but also a philanthropist who touched many lives. The overwhelming outpouring of tributes across the country speaks volumes about his character as a kind, humble and benevolent person,” he said.

He further recalled that Ashaka was among the finest correspondents produced by VOA, widely admired for his calm voice and balanced reporting style, which endeared him to listeners over the years.

Gwarzo added that the journalist’s passing has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill, especially at a time when the media industry requires experienced and principled voices.

He extended condolences to the family, friends and professional colleagues of the deceased, praying for Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and give those he left behind the strength to bear the loss.
