Prof. Ayo Hammed of the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, has been appointed director of the Counselling Institute of Nigeria.

The institute is a professional body established by the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) to provide continuing professional development for counsellors and allied professionals.

The appointment was conveyed in a letter signed by CASSON president, Prof. Ike Ifelunni.

In the letter, Ifelunni recognises Prof Hammed’s professional competence, extensive experience and transformational leadership demonstrated throughout his career.

According to the association, the new institute was created to strengthen professional development opportunities for counsellors and related practitioners, with Prof Hammed expected to provide strategic direction and leadership to drive its growth and institutional development.

“This appointment recognizes your professional competence, wealth of experience, and transformational leadership style, which you have demonstrated throughout your career.

“We hope you will help us nurture this new institute and develop a strategic plan for its growth. This is not a tenured appointment but a part-time position to assist the association in launching the institute,” he said.

CASSON also expressed confidence in his ability to nurture the institute and formulate a strategic framework to support its expansion and long-term sustainability.

The association noted that the appointment is a part-time, non-tenured role designed to support the establishment and successful take-off of the institute, with the effective date subject to Prof Hammed’s acceptance.

As Director, he will oversee the institute’s operations and ensure the effective implementation of its programmes and objectives.

He is also expected to coordinate and supervise the institute’s activities while working closely with the Heads of Training and Programmes, Administration and Finance, and ICT.
