Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran Yoruba actor and scholar of African drama, Dr Kola Oyewo, describing him as a legendary thespian whose contributions to theatre and storytelling left an enduring legacy.

Atiku made the remarks in a tribute posted on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, a day after news broke that the revered actor had died at 80.

Reacting to the veteran actor’s passing, the former presidential candidate said Oyewole’s death had created a significant vacuum in the theatre community.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Kola Oweyo, a legendary thespian and scholar of African drama,” Atiku wrote.

“His iconic role as King Lapite in the timeless Saworoide immortalised his immense talent and teachings,” he stated.

Atiku further lamented the loss to the arts sector, saying, “A great void has been left in Theatre Arts.”

According to him, Oyewole’s impact extended beyond Nigeria, earning him admiration among audiences and lovers of African storytelling across the world.

“He will be sorely missed by lovers of African stories worldwide,” the former vice president added.

Atiku also extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues, students and admirers, describing Oyewole as an exceptional dramatist and a teacher who used his craft to promote social consciousness.

News of Oyewo’s death was announced on Friday by fellow actor Kunle Afod in a statement shared on his Instagram page.

The actor’s son, Adetoyese Oyewo, also confirmed the development in a Facebook post, revealing that his father died on Friday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father, Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo,” he wrote.

“He was a wonderful man whose love, wisdom, strength, and kindness touched the lives of many. While we grieve this great loss, we are grateful to God for the gift of his life, the memories we shared, and the legacy he leaves behind.”

Dr. Oyewo was widely respected in Nigeria’s theatre and film industry for his contributions to African drama, scholarship and cultural preservation. He gained widespread acclaim for his role as King Lapite in Saworoide, a classic political drama that remains one of the most celebrated works in Nigerian cinema.
