Renowned lawyer, Dr. Reuben Atabo (SAN), has urged the federal government to hold those perpetuating killings in the country accountable, describing the act as genocide.

Atabo stated this while celebrating 36 years at the bar in Abuja at the weekend.

In his address at the event, Atabo said, “I give God glory for His grace, wisdom and strength over the last 36 years. Indeed, I can classify these periods as times of amazing grace from God upon my life.

“What is happening in Nigeria is genocide and the government should step up to its responsibilities.” Atabo cited the UN Convention on Genocide Prevention, saying genocide is not merely mass killings but the targeted destruction of a people.

His call came amid reports of coordinated attacks on indigenous farming communities in Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Southern Kaduna and other states in the North with over 1,336 people killed in Plateau State alone between December 2023 and February 2024.

He also advocated for legislation to prosecute former political office holders for abuse of power and poor decisions made in office, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability.

Deputy Head of Chambers at R.O. Atabo, SAN & Co., Mrs. Abaro Gloria Haruna, highlighted Atabo’s attributes which have earned him great respect and admiration.

Keynote speaker Dr. Joseph Akubo (SAN), described Atabo as a man with a golden heart—humble, generous, and hardworking. Atabo attributed his successes to God’s mercy, stating, “I give God glory for His grace, wisdom, and strength over the last thirty-six years.”

Tributes from attendees praised Atabo’s humility, determination, passion for justice, and commitment to doing things the right way.
