Hollywood actor and director, Robert Redford, has died at the age of 89, his publicist confirmed.

Redford passed away “at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” publicist Cindi Berger said in a statement.

No cause of death was given.

Redford’s career spanned six decades and was marked by acclaimed performances in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), and All the President’s Men (1976). He received his only Oscar nomination as an actor for The Sting but earned an Academy Award for his directorial debut, Ordinary People (1980).

Beyond Hollywood, Redford was celebrated as the driving force behind the modern independent film movement. He founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 and transformed a struggling film festival into the globally renowned Sundance Film Festival.

“For me, the word to be underscored is ‘independence,’” Redford said in 2018, reflecting on his mission to give emerging filmmakers a platform.

A lifelong advocate for environmental causes, Redford was remembered for his quiet but steady commitment to conservation.

His final screen role came in 2018’s The Old Man and the Gun, which he described as his farewell to acting.

Redford was married twice, most recently to artist Sibylle Szaggars. He had four children, two of whom, Scott Anthony and filmmaker James Redford, predeceased him.
