Fear gripped residents of Rano in Kano State on Monday as the chairperson of Tudun Wada local government area and Kano State leader of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu, narrowly escaped a mob attack by suspected political thugs after a political rally.

The rally, held in support of Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila’s second-term senatorial bid, was attended by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and drew a large crowd of supporters from across the zone.

Despite earlier warnings by Senator Sumaila against the presence of political enforcers and weapons at the venue, violence reportedly broke out as the event drew to a close.

Eyewitnesses said the situation escalated when Salisu attempted to leave the venue ahead of the governor to avoid the surging crowd. Armed youths allegedly swooped on her convoy, wielding sticks, machetes and stones.

“They chased her vehicle and smashed parts of it. It was a chaotic scene, and people ran for safety,” a witness recounted.

Security operatives attached to the ALGON chair were said to have acted swiftly, shielding her from harm and navigating through the crowd under intense pressure. Her convoy vehicle though damaged, managed to escape the scene.

Sources within the security circle described the incident as a near-fatal attack, noting that the quick response of operatives averted what could have been a major tragedy.

The development has heightened concerns over rising political violence in parts of Kano State, particularly in Tudun Wada and Doguwa local government areas, where rival political factions have been locked in intense supremacy battles ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, security operatives and government officials have yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
