As of October 12, 2026, there are 96 days remaining until Nigeria’s 2027 general elections scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027.
Because Nigeria uses a presidential system, voters will vote for the president and members of both the Senate and House of Representatives simultaneously. However, not all elections will be held on the same day.
The Presidential and House of Assembly elections will be held on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for 3 weeks later, on February 6, 2027.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is already preparing for the elections as we enter the final 100 days. The countdown changes daily, you’ll need to track the date yourself. Consult the official timeline and use a dedicated days calculator to see how many days are left until the 2027 Nigeria election date.
Which Elections Are Taking Place in Nigeria in 2027?
According to the INEC calendar, we’re set for the following elections in Nigeria in 2027:
- Presidential elections on Saturday, January 16, 2027. Voters will elect the President and Vice President.
- House of Assembly elections on Saturday, January 16, 2027. All 109 seats representing the senatorial districts in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as all 360 federal constituency seats, are contested.
- Governorship elections on Saturday, February 6, 2027. Governors across 28 states will be elected, while the remaining 8 states don’t hold elections on the same date due to past rulings.
- State House of Assembly elections on Saturday, February 6, 2027. All 36 state legislative seats are up for election.
Important Events Leading Into the Elections
The INEC 2027 election timetable has already changed before. First, INEC revised it in February 2026 after the Electoral Act of 2026 passed. In this revision INEC moved both election dates forward into the future: from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027, and from March 6, 2027, to February 6, 2027.
By the end of May 2026 all parties have submitted their digital membership rosters and hold internal candidate nominations.
Next, between June and August 2026, the parties handed in their candidate forms which were promptly published by INEC. This included personal particulars and affidavits of candidates within the required deadlines.
The Presidential Contenders
Eighteen parties are on the ballot, but polls agree that this is a three-horse race. Incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is running for a second term under the All Progressives Congress (APC) with Vice President Kashim Shettima. His closest opposition is veteran politician Atiku Abubakar, who leads the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket alongside running mate Rotimi Amaechi.
The third candidate is Peter Obi, running on a coalition platform (NDC) alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Key Milestones You Should Know About Before the Elections
INEC has already publish the official list of presidential, legislative, and gubernatorial candidates, but other important dates remain. If voters want to change their voting location, register, or apply for a replacement of a lost or damaged voter card, they have:
- 6 days, or until October 18, 2026, to do so for the Presidential and National Assembly elections
- 27 days, or until November 8, 2026, to do so for the Governorship and State Assembly elections
It’s also worth noting that INEC must publish the official notices in each constituency showing the date and time of the poll and the designated locations for the polling units by:
- January 2, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections
- January 23, 2027, for the Governorship and State Assembly elections
After that, we’ll only need to wait for the polls to open on the designated days.
