Nigeria’s sprint star Chidi Okezie delivered a standout performance to help Team Nigeria secure qualification for the World Championships in the 4×400m mixed relay at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, which ended on Sunday.

Okezie played a pivotal role as the Nigerian quartet battled fiercely against a competitive field, showing resilience and tactical discipline to clinch one of the coveted qualification spots.

Chairman of the media committee of
Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Maxwell Kumoye, in a press statement released on Monday, noted that Okezie’s composure on the track and strong finishing effort proved decisive in sealing Nigeria’s passage to the global showpiece.

Reflecting on the achievement, Okezie emphasized the team’s determination despite the pressure.

“It wasn’t an easy race, but we came in with a clear goal, to qualify for the World Championships and we gave everything to make it happen,” he said.

Competing before an energetic crowd in Gaborone, the Nigerian team rose to the occasion, overcoming early pressure to stay within contention before executing a well-timed surge in the final stretch.

Okezie’s experience anchored the team’s effort at a crucial moment.

“We trusted each other and stuck to the plan. In relays, it’s not just about individual strength but how well you come together as a team,” he added.

“I’m proud of what we achieved here, and this is just the beginning.”

The result marks a significant milestone for Team Nigeria, reaffirming their strength in relay events and boosting confidence ahead of the World Championships.

With Okezie leading from the front, the team now shifts focus to fine-tuning preparations for the global stage.

Looking ahead, the seasoned quarter-miler remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances.

“We know there’s still work to be done, but this performance shows we are on the right track. By the time we get to the World Championships, we’ll be ready to compete with the best,” he said.

Sunday’s performance not only secured qualification but also underscored Nigeria’s growing depth in the mixed relay, with Okezie once again proving to be a dependable figure when it matters most.
