The global socio-cultural organisation for the Idoma people, Ochetoha K’Idoma has congratulated Benue State on its Golden Jubilee.

It, however, called for greater equity and inclusive governance in the state.

The organisation extended warm felicitations to Governor Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia and the entire state on this significant milestone, which occurred on 3rd February 2026.

In a press statement signed by its president-general, Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, the group described the jubilee as a moment for both celebration and honest reflection on Benue’s past and future. The statement highlighted the Idoma people’s long history in the Benue Valley, predating colonial boundaries, and their consistent contributions to national service.

It noted the significant roles played by Idoma natives, such as pioneering federal civil servants like Dr Edwin Ogbu and Abu Obe, two Senate Presidents from Benue South (Ameh Ebute and David Mark) and numerous high-ranking military officers, including Brigadier Ebije Ikwue and several military governors.

Academically, the statement recognised Dr Edwin Ogbu as Benue State’s first university graduate in 1954 and celebrated the League of Idoma and Igede Professors, now exceeding 300 members.

It also acknowledged prominent figures in medicine, journalism, commerce, arts, sports, and faith.

However, Ochetoha K’Idoma expressed concern over a “pattern of exclusion” within Benue governance. The group pointed out that in 50 years, no indigene of Benue South Senatorial District has served as Governor or Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, only one as Chief Judge, and none as Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University.

The organisation urged accelerated development in Benue South through investment in infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, and the transparent exploitation of natural resources. It also called for stronger security measures, full enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition Law, and significant youth empowerment.

Ochetoha K’Idoma concluded by expressing hope for a Benue State where leadership is merit-based, opportunities are equitably shared, and every zone feels a true sense of belonging.
