For the first time, members of the Igbo Wikipedia Community will join the International Wiki Loves Mother Tongue to commemorate the 2026 International Mother Tongue Day.
Marked every February 21, UNESCO International Mother Tongue Day aims to promote linguistic, cultural diversity, and multilingualism as a means of preserving cultural heritage, preventing language extinction, improving education, and fostering peace and tolerance.
By joining the Wiki Loves Mother Tongue, the Igbo Wiki Community is rededicating itself to its campaign to preserve the Igbo language and ensure digital knowledge equity.
“By joining this campaign, we aim to strengthen the presence of Igbo across Wikimedia projects, encourage native speakers to actively contribute in their mother tongue, promote pride in using Igbo for knowledge production, and inspire young people to see their language as modern, relevant, and powerful.”
Interested participants should register with the Igbo Wiki Community and create, improve, or translate articles on the Igbo Language Wikipedia and WikiData from February 22 to March 22, 2026.
First- to fifth-prize winners will be awarded for their contributions, while consolation prizes will be awarded to the 6th to 10th runners-up.
