Igboho Launches 50,000-Member Security Network In South-West

Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho has announced the formation of a 50,000-member security network named “Ija Ekun” (Tiger’s War), saying the group is prepared to confront banditry, armed herders, and terrorist activity across parts of the South-West and Kwara State.

The announcement comes in the wake of the killing of a teacher in Oyo State and recent abductions of schoolchildren, incidents Igboho described as a breaking point for communities in the region.

He said the proposed force had already been trained and structured, but would await official approval from relevant federal and state authorities before moving into forest zones allegedly used as hideouts by criminal elements.

“Ija Ekun Is Ready, I Will Not Wait For Approval Anymore,” Igboho said.

Igboho stressed that while the initiative was prepared for deployment, it would not operate outside legal authorisation. However, he warned that continued insecurity and delays in government response could leave local communities with no option but to organise self-defence mechanisms.

He also called on South-West governors, traditional rulers, and security agencies to urgently consider approval for coordinated operations, claiming that key hideouts had already been identified.

The announcement has renewed debate over the emergence of regional security structures such as the Amotekun Corps, as well as wider concerns about the legality and oversight of non-state armed groups.

Supporters of the initiative say it reflects growing frustration over persistent insecurity, while critics warn that expanding armed civilian formations could heighten tensions and complicate existing security efforts.

Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the proposal.
