The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has expressed optimism that school children recently abducted in Oyo State will be rescued alive and unharmed, as security operations intensify to secure their release.

The assurance, which has drawn commendation from the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN), was described as a reflection of growing confidence in the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership.

In a statement marking the IGP’s 100 days in office on June 12, 2026, CCAN said the police chief’s firm assurance has reassured anxious families and the wider public, while reinforcing confidence in ongoing rescue efforts.

The statement, signed by CCAN Chairman Festus Fifen and Secretary Peter Ireh, noted that the IGP’s confidence in a successful outcome reflects what it described as a strengthened intelligence-driven policing strategy.

“At a moment of national anxiety over the fate of the abducted Oyo school children, the Inspector-General’s assurance that they will be rescued unhurt reflects not only confidence in the operational capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force but also an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every mission reaches a successful conclusion,” the association said.

CCAN further stated that within the first 100 days of the IGP’s tenure, the Nigeria Police Force had recorded notable gains in the fight against kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, cultism and other violent crimes through improved intelligence gathering and coordinated operations.

The association also disclosed that security agencies had arrested hundreds of suspected criminals and rescued at least 277 kidnap victims nationwide during the period under review.

According to CCAN, the period has marked a shift toward what it described as professionalism, strategic leadership and renewed public confidence in policing.

“These first 100 days have signalled a clear departure from the old order. They have been defined by professionalism, purposeful leadership, and a strategic vision aimed at strengthening internal security and restoring public confidence in policing,” the statement said.

The group commended ongoing reforms within the police system, noting that the current leadership is focused on rebuilding trust through citizen-centred policing and institutional accountability.

“We commend your unwavering commitment to rebranding the Nigeria Police Force. Through deliberate reforms and citizen-centred policies, your administration has begun dismantling long-standing negative perceptions and rebuilding public trust in the institution,” CCAN added.

It also highlighted what it described as improved intelligence-led policing and stronger community engagement, saying these approaches are reshaping the relationship between law enforcement agencies and the public.

CCAN maintained that recent operational successes show that policing in Nigeria can be both firm and professional while respecting citizens’ rights.

One of the key achievements noted by the association is the improved rapport between police officers and members of the public, alongside stricter enforcement of discipline and accountability within the Force.
