Nigeria striker Kelechi Iheanacho is poised to discuss a contract extension with Celtic once the club’s Scottish Cup final concludes on Saturday.

The 29-year-old’s current one-year deal expires at the end of the season, but his contributions during Celtic’s title-winning league campaign and cup run have strengthened his case for a new agreement.

Iheanacho joined the Scottish side after terminating his contract with Sevilla and made an impressive start at Celtic Park. Although injuries later hampered his progress, he regained form and proved crucial off the bench as Celtic secured the Premiership title on the final day against Hearts.

The former Manchester City forward grabbed headlines with a dramatic 99th-minute penalty in Celtic’s 3-2 win over Motherwell in the penultimate league match—a result that pushed the title race to the last day.

When asked about his future, Iheanacho who also played for Leicester City said, “I think after 90 minutes on Saturday, then we’ll talk about that.”

Celtic hold an option to extend his deal by another year, and according to Football Insider, the hunger Iheanacho has shown is likely to prompt the club to trigger that clause.

His value to the team is further elevated by the potential departure of Daizen Maeda, who has admitted he wants to play in the Premier League.

With several stars at risk of leaving, Celtic are keen to retain key players like Iheanacho.
