Ijaw political leaders have called for greater unity among stakeholders in the region, urging politicians to set aside differences in the interest of strengthening democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The call was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Ijaw Professionals in Nigeria (IPIN), titled “A Path to Progress in 2027.”

The group emphasised the need for collaboration among Ijaw political actors to maximise their influence in the South-South geopolitical zone.

IPIN also encouraged engagement with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), noting that broader political participation would enhance governance and development across the region.

In the statement, the group expressed support for the Delta South senatorial candidate of the NDC, Dr. Austin Orette, citing his perceived leadership qualities and vision for the district.

The group, however, urged voters to critically assess candidates ahead of the elections, including comparing the performance of the incumbent senator with the promises put forward by challengers.

The statement further highlighted the importance of political cohesion among Ijaw leaders, noting that unity could play a decisive role in shaping electoral outcomes in states across the South-South, including Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

Speaking with journalists, spokesman of the Ijaw United Front (IUF), Dr. Pere Sodienye, reiterated the group’s position, stressing the need for what he described as increased political awareness among Ijaw stakeholders.

He added that the 2027 elections would present an opportunity for the region to redefine its political direction through informed choices by the electorate.
