Match Day Two of the inaugural Benin Unity Cup delivered high drama at the Crescent Sports Club, Irhirhi, as late goals, a walkover, and six-goal thrillers captivated fans across a pulsating football weekend.
Ikpoba-Okha set the tone on Friday with a last-gasp equaliser, whilst Saturday’s fixtures produced a flurry of goals that further ignited the competition.
Friday’s opener saw Ikpoba-Okha snatch a dramatic 1–1 draw against Egor after Emeka Nwaneda struck in the 90th minute, cancelling out Towo Eventus’ early second-half goal. The day’s second fixture was decided off the pitch, as Ovia North East were awarded a walkover victory when Uhunmwonde failed to turn up within the allotted time.
Saturday’s early kick-off featured a six-goal thriller, with Orhionmwon overpowering Ovia South West 4–2. Iworie Chinedu netted the tournament’s fastest goal before Ovia South West equalised through Oghene Ovo. Osifo Osakpolor’s brace and a goal from Kish Danjuma put Orhionmwon firmly in control, whilst Osadolor Lucky’s late strike proved only a consolation.
The much-anticipated Oredo derby lived up to expectations as Oredo I and Oredo II battled to a gripping 3–3 draw. Waheed Ahmed opened the scoring for Oredo II, but Oredo I roared back with goals from Samuel Brownson (two) and Sunday Henry. Oredo II refused to fade, levelling the match with goals from Friday Omoregie and Anthony Ogudu to seal one of the tournament’s most exhilarating contests.
With only two match days completed, the Benin Unity Cup, sponsored by Senator Neda Imasuen, continues to showcase grassroots talent, revive local rivalries, and highlight football’s enduring power to unite communities whilst offering young players opportunities for future advancement.
