Infantino Abandons FIFA Forward Enterprise Amid Mounting Opposition

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the governing body’s controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal has been abandoned, admitting the plan had created divisions that were no longer in the best interests of world football.

In a statement released on Friday, Infantino said the project, which was designed to generate additional resources for FIFA’s 211 member associations through private investment, would not proceed after extensive consultations revealed deep divisions among football stakeholders.

The FIFA president insisted the proposal had always been conditional on securing broad backing from member associations and following a comprehensive consultation process involving the FIFA Council, continental confederations and other stakeholders.

“The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to provide a basis for further strengthening our FIFA Member Associations and our sport worldwide, especially in those countries where support is most needed,” Infantino said.

He added that FIFA had made it clear from the outset that the proposal would only move forward if it enjoyed the support of a majority of member associations.

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” he said.

Infantino stressed that FIFA’s priority remained promoting unity across the global game.

“Our purpose has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve,” he said.

“As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”

The decision follows widespread opposition from several football stakeholders, including UEFA and a number of national associations, who argued that selling a stake in FIFA competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, to private investors risked undermining the long-term interests of the game.

Infantino said FIFA would now focus on rebuilding consensus, revealing plans to engage with member associations, confederations and other stakeholders in the coming weeks.

“Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support,” he said.

The withdrawal of the FFE proposal marks a significant reversal for FIFA after weeks of intense debate over the future funding model for football’s global development programmes.
