The chairman of Berger Paints Nigeria Plc, Abi Ayida, has said innovation should focus on solving real problems rather than simply introducing new products into the market.
Ayida stated this in Lagos at the unveiling of a thermal paint solution designed to reduce heat absorption in buildings and promote energy-efficient spaces.
The product, which can be applied to both interior and exterior surfaces, was launched at a high-level industry forum convened by Berger Paints to examine how innovation, sustainability and occupant wellbeing can reshape Nigeria’s built environment.
According to Ayida, Berger Paints’ longstanding presence in Nigeria’s built environment comes with a responsibility to deploy its experience and knowledge in addressing contemporary challenges facing customers and communities.
“Innovation is not simply about producing something new. It is about producing something useful and solving problems,” he said.
He stated further that the need for buildings that respond to Nigeria’s climate while offering greater comfort and resilience.
He called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in the building sector, noting that collective action would be critical to improving outcomes for building occupants.
Also, the Group managing director of Berger Paints, Alaba Fagun, said the new product was inspired by the need to enhance how Nigerians live in their homes and workspaces.
She explained that the company worked with stakeholders across the building industry to understand the practical challenges facing building owners, professionals and occupants, adding that the insights reinforced the company’s commitment to improving standards and occupant experience.
Fagun noted that the quality of a completed building should not be judged solely by its physical structure or finishing, but also by the comfort, efficiency and overall experience it delivers.
The launch comes amid rising temperatures, growing concerns over climate change and escalating energy costs, with the product positioned as a solution aimed at improving indoor comfort and reducing reliance on excessive cooling.
Delivering the keynote address on ‘Innovation as a Catalyst for Sustainable Growth’, the founder and chief executive officer of the Chair Centre Group, Ibukun Awosika, urged businesses to deepen their understanding of customers and respond deliberately to changing market needs.
Awosika said innovation should go beyond new technologies, products and processes to encompass a mindset that challenges established practices, identifies emerging needs and develops solutions that create meaningful value.
The forum brought together stakeholders across real estate, construction, architecture, design, finance, sustainability and government to discuss the future of Nigeria’s built environment under the theme, ‘What Does the Finished Nigeria Deserve?’
