The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has backed the call by the House of Representatives Minority Caucus urging President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate stronger leadership in addressing Nigeria’s security and economic challenges or consider stepping aside.

CUPP said the administration must urgently respond to worsening insecurity, economic hardship and growing concerns over the welfare of Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its Acting National Chairman, Chief Peter Ameh, the opposition coalition said it aligns with the position of the Minority Caucus and believes government performance should be measured by its ability to improve citizens’ lives.

According to the statement, elected leaders have a responsibility to deliver good governance and should be held accountable where expectations are not met.

“In a sane clime, any elected official who refuses to produce results of good governance that will help make the lives of the people better should honourably resign,” the statement read.

CUPP further stated that President Tinubu and his administration must immediately intensify efforts to tackle insecurity and ease the economic difficulties facing Nigerians.

“President Bola Tinubu and his administration must step up immediately to address the pressing issues of insecurity, economic hardship and the general wellbeing of Nigerians.

“Leadership is not a right but a responsibility. Where this responsibility is not being discharged effectively, the honourable path is resignation.

“We urge the President to heed this call and take immediate, visible steps to alleviate the suffering of citizens across the country,” the statement added.

The coalition also pledged to continue monitoring developments and said it would remain vocal on issues affecting Nigerians and continue to demand accountability from those in government.

The position follows renewed criticism from opposition figures and some lawmakers over the federal government’s handling of insecurity and economic conditions across the country.
